Stewart Chipka (Saba Orchid Research Center) heeft de flora op het terrein van Juliana’s gebotaniseerd en van naambordjes voorzien. Hij is ook van plan een gedetailleerd handboek te schrijven voor bij de bordjes.

Nieuwe Barbeque bij Orchid Cottage
Om de renovatie van Orchid Cottage af te maken hebben we een nieuwe ruimte gecreëerd achter het terrein, waardoor het al ruime dek nog groterwordt! Dus nu barbequeën onder de sterren.

Onderhouds verbeteringen voor Orchid
Orchid cottage is weer vers in de verf gezet en er zijn nieuwe planten en bloemen gepland in de tuinen. Tevens heeft de ruimte van de ‘buiten’ badkamer een sproeier en lichtsystemen erbij gekregen zodat de orchids en varens van hun nieuwe thuis op de rots kunnen gaan genieten!

Nieuwe stagiaire
Rianne Jonker uit Alkmaar, Nederland, is toegevoegd aan het team van Juliana’s. Ze studeert aan de hogeschool INHOLLAND waar ze de studie International Business & Languages volgt. Ze zal gedurende 5 maanden aan een marketing opdracht gaan werken en haar Engelse vaardigheden verbeteren.

De onderwaterwereld komt naar het terras voor Juliana’s receptie
Robbie Lynn heeft het weer voor elkaar gekregen! Robby heeft kort geleden een nieuwe meubelstijl ontwikkeld, namelijk de onderwater stijl. Zijn tweede creatie is een tafel op basis van de zee wereld. Hij heeft ermee toegestemd om zijn werk te laten zien, buiten voor de receptie van Juliana’s. Volgens het commentaar van velen ziet het er erg realistisch uit ziet als je het onderwaterwereldse detail door het glazen tafelblad ziet. Deze artistieke toevoeging bij Juliana’s geeft u nu een geweldige plek om van een drankje te genieten tijdens de zonsondergang.

Kunstenaar Robbie Lynn heeft weer een meesterwerk geleverd. Onze vooringang heeft nu een wonderbaarlijke waterval en vijver met metalen lelies gemaakt door Robbie Lynn. Kom snel kijken naar ons nieuwe waterornament.

Personeels cursussen
Leanna, Paula en Lieke hebben hun certificaat behaald voor de Customer Service cursus. De cursus duurde drie avonden en werd begeleid door de Sabaanse Carol Zegers. Zij hebben de cursus als prettig ervaren en het was een goede opfrissing voor hoe belangrijk goede service is bij Tropics en Juliana’s Hotel.

Lieke Dellaert heeft zich aangesloten bij het personeel van Juliana’s Hotel, zij zal voor 5 maanden op Saba zijn om te werken aan een Marketing research plan voor haar afstuderen aan de Avans Hogeschool, waar zij International Business en Management studeert.

Transfomatie van de Rrecreatie Ruimte en een Extra Computer!
Robbie Lynn is weer aan de gang geweest! Hij veranderde de Rec-Room in weer een meesterwerk! Een nieuwe boekenkast en “cottage area”voor de computers, nu met 2 computers voor het gebruik van de gasten. Vergeet niet om uw laptrop mee te brengen, er is gratis internet verbinding!

Kerst Diner
Het personeel van Juliana’s en Tropic’s heeft gezamenlijk genoten van het kerstdiner op 13 december, voordat Francia naar huis vertrok voor haar Kerst vakantie. Er waren een hele hoop verrassingen van de Geheime Kerst Uitwisselings van de Kerstman en een verloting met geschenken van Wim en Johanna.

Een opknapbeurtje.
Armond ons manusje van alles (beter bekend als Picky) is bezig met het schilderen van de gebouwen en daken zo dat alles er weer fris uitziet voor het komende Nieuwe Jaar.
Malachy heeft ook een prachtig nieuw hotel logo ontworpen en dat op een van de wanden van het hotel geschilderd.

Lokale Kunstenaar voltooit Meesterwerk in Mango!
Locale kunstenaar en buurman Robbie Lynn heeft van het Mango Appartement een prachtige verblijfplaats tussen de takken gemaakt met zijn afbeelding van de Mango Boom. Het hele appartement is gedecoreerd met geschilderde Mango bomen die zich uitstrekken over de muren en het plafond. Nieuwe zonwering, linnen en een uniek afdakje van muskietengaas in de slaapkamer zijn toegevoegd waardoor een echt jungle gevoel gecreëerd wordt. Goed gedaan Mr. Lynn! Binnenkort kunt u meer van de hand van Robbie verwachten bij het zwembad van Tropics....

Tropics Café Heropent!

Everything's finished on time, the new bar, signage, recovered seat & hand painted signage! Tropics opened again for business on the 16th, everyone was very impressed by the totally rebuilt bar area, lot's more space and everything in its place...

Alles is op tijd klaar, de nieuwe bar, de uithangborden, nieuwe kussens op de stoelen en met de hand geschilderde signs. Tropics was weer in vol bedrijf op de 16de, iedereen was erg onder de indruk van de total herbouwde bar, veel meer ruimte en alles overzichtelijk.

Maike Hofstra is bij ons personeel aangesloten. Maike studeert Toeristisch Management in Groningen en zal werken aan een aantal projecten gedurende de 8 maanden dat zij op Saba verblijft.

Dive Buddies’ Buffet

Tropics heeft een nieuwe thema avond! Iedere zondagavond organiseert Juliana’s hotel een dive buffet voor alle duikinstructeurs op het eiland. Zo kunnen ze hun verhalen uitwisselen en geïnteresseerden misschien wel advies geven! Voor maar $25.- per persoon kunt u gebruik maken van een lopend buffet en is er keuze uit vis of vlees. Spaar uw hongerige buien dus op , want u kunt zoveel eten als u wilt!



Een magische avond...

Tropics ontving een magische show van ‘The Magic Dokter’ , een googelaar uit Duitsland. Geld verdween, kaarten kwamen uit het niet tevoorschijn en er gingen zelfs een paar dingen in rook op! Vanwege het magische thema draaide Tropics Disney’s film “Alladin”.

Wij hebben het menu bijgesteld met algemene informatie over onze thema avonden en onze speciale huiscocktail lijst. Het heeft nu een frisse nieuwe uitstraling en alles is heel helder gepresenteerd.

Personeels uitje!
Het personeel van Tropics heeft genoten van hun vrije dag. Deze spendeerden zij in The Gate House waar zij een kookles en een wijnproef cursus hadden. Verder brachten zij de middag door met hun familie in tropics en genoten zij van pizza en de nieuwe Jacuzzi!

Flossie’s metamorfose
Het is nu 2 jaar geleden en de vloer van Flossie’s is weer opnieuw gelakt. Ook hebben wij een ontzettend mooi dek gebouwd waar men kan relaxen of een BBQ kan houden. Onze gloednieuwe Jacuzzi is geweldig voor mensen die ’s nachts rustig naar de sterren willen kijken!

Juliana’s heeft nu 2 jacuzzi’s! Eentje bij Flossie’s Cottage en eentje bij Tropics Café. Dus kom langs, ga in onze jacuzzi zitten en geniet van de zon terwijl u van een heerlijke Daiquiri geniet.

Tropics Café organiseert nu een geweldige Caribische avond met locale en Caribische gerechten, zoals kreeft en vis geserveerd met ‘fresh Saba veggies’, rijst and Johnny cakes. Het menu hangt af van de beschikbaarheid van de locale gerechten.

We were all finally able to sit around the table together and share a great Christmas meal. Chefs Carl and Rudolph spoiled us all at YIIK. Afterwards we all had some drinks at Swinging Doors, where Eddy now has Stella on tap!

All our rooms have received a new amenity, they now have CD radios, so bring down some of your favorite CD’s and listen to them in the comforts of your room.

We’re starting to create a CD book, so that you can pick out some music if you forgot to bring down your own.

Jesca will be doing her internship at Juliana’s Hotel for the coming 6 months, she will be involved with the setting up of our second annual Sea and Learn on Saba event, and also with the Hell’s Gate Challenge triathlon on Sunday December 5th 2004.

We added great new outside dining facilities at Tropics; we’ve added four rum barrels which were transformed into great outdoor tables. Tropics has also added a unique “swingers” table…….the table chairs are actual swings……..Swing at your own risk!

Queen’s Day
Saba’s Queens Day was celebrated the Dutch way! Tropics served Dutch pancakes, poffertjes, apple flaps and croquettes. We also had Dutch themed games, such a pin the crown on the queen, flag hoisting competition and kopsijkeren.

Easter Brunch
Tropics celebrated Easter Sunday with a refreshing brunch, fresh juices, homemade muffins and cakes, and an Easter egg competition for the kids.

New Chef hired!
Paula Childs has been hired as the new chief at Tropics Café. She adds to the Tropics experience with her local dishes and great daily lunch specials. We’re all glad to have Paula on board.

Tropics now has Saba’s only Cinema. This out door movie theater boast a 12 x 18ft screen and entertains Tropics guests & locals every Friday night with a Dinner and a movie (Any choice of burger; beef, chicken, fish or chicken) for only $10.00, Opening night we showed Finding Nemo.

Tropics New Management
Tropics Café located in Windwardside across from Juliana's Hotel is now under the management of hotel owner/operators Wim & Johanna. The restaurant previously served only vegetarian/natural foods, and the couple wanted to offer their customers a fuller menu, including meat and eggs, particularly requested by their tourists dive packages. The restaurant will be open every day from 7am until 9pm or closing; whichever comes first. The full menu will be served all day long, so tourists with a longing for burgers for breakfast may order at will.

Saba Triathlon a success!
42 participants joined the first annual Triathlon, called the Hell’s Gate Challenge. The quickest time of 1hr 55 min went to a St. Maarten participant and the second running up went to Saba’s Chris Porterfield with a time of 1hr 58min

Juliana’s Hotel wins the best public garden award at Saba Day’s memorial service. Thank you Martje for the great work!

New Staff Member?
Is there a new staff member at Juliana’s Hotel? What will his position be? Wim and Johanna are the happiest couple on island due to the new arrival of there Labrador puppy Kane. Kane came down with Nurse Suzanne from Canada. Thank you Suzan, you’ve made us even happier now!

Organization of Triathlon
The island's first triathlon event, "The Hell's Gate Challenge," will take place on Sunday, December 7, the last day of the Saba Days weekend celebration. Organizer Johanna van t'Hof of Juliana's said that the rigorous courses were recently set out by the St. Maarten Friendly Island Triathlon Association (FITA) in cooperation with the Saba Conservation Foundation.
The first section, swimming, will start and end at Well's Bay, with a trajectory marked by buoys. The bike portion leads from Well's Bay through The Bottom and Windwardside, finishing at the end of the Mountain Road. The running segment will follow a loop from Rendezvous to Queen's Garden and over the Sandy Cruz trail ending at the Hell's Gate Roman Catholic church. The triathlon may also be executed by teams, with members taking only one or two segments, handing off to a team member for the next segment.

Sea and Learn a success!
Almost 100 adults and children attended the final evening of what promises to be the first annual Sea & Learn on Saba. Tropics, The Natural Café, hosted the event. Organizers set up the facility as an outdoor amphitheater with a huge screen and well equipped sound system.

The event was made possible through a grass roots cooperative effort headed by Lynn Costenaro of Sea Saba Dive Center and Johanna van t'Hof of Juliana's Hotel. Expert speakers were invited from as far away as York University in England but they also took advantage of local and regional expertise both on island and from the neighboring islands of Tortola, St. Maarten and Antigua. A different speaker at a different venue was scheduled each night in October. Topics ranged from rainforests and insects to turtles and muck diving. "Sea & Learn 2004 promises to be even bigger and better.

We would like thank our sponsors: The Edge ferry boat, Winair and LIAT airlines, local hotels: El Momo Cottages, Ecolodge Rendezvous, and Juliana's Hotel as well as selected restaurants: The Brigadoon, YIIK, Tropics. Flossie’s Cottage Floor gets a fresh look.
Flossie’s antique floor restored to its original condition. After stripping the original coating the floor was sanded smooth and re-varnished to show the splendor of its original color.

Rec. room floor gets rebuilt
Carpet out…tiles are in. The rec. room seems to be allot more work than anticipated. While taking out the carpet Wim and Martje realized that also the beams had to be replaced. Lots of work, but with a new tiled floor, the rec. room will now host a roomier internet café, library, conference room, game section and DVD area. Sea Saba’s dive classes and Suzanne Nielson’s Yoga classes will still be held in the rec. room as well.

We were all sorry to see Vanessa leave! Vanessa has moved away to be with her boyfriend in the united States, We will definitely miss Vanessa, and hope that she’s able to make her dreams a reality.

Internet Café!
Juliana's joins the information superhighway and offers an internet cafe to it’s clients. Set up in a quite corner of the Juliana's rec. room. Access is password-protected. At $5 for 30 minutes, length of time on the .net is calculated on the honor system. Guests can also down load pictures from their digital cameras, and email these home in advance of their return. The hotel's computer is equipped with a CD burner, so that guests can make a record of their trip or leave that special photograph behind with their new Saban friends.

We have now upgraded the cottage with a DVD player, guests can now bring down DVDs of choice and enjoy these in there private cottages.

New gardener hired.
Marje has been hired as the new garden at Juliana’s Hotel, Martje is the Ecolodge Rendez-vous gardener and now joins the Juliana’s team in the afternoons 3 times a week. Glad to have you on board Martje.

The Front Desk office gets a paint job and new furniture. Painted in a pale blue, it gives the office a refreshing look, underwater paintings from artist Heleen Cornet are hung up and are also for sale.

New bed spreads, curtains and artwork are hung up in both Flossie’s and Orchid. Flossie’s has been given a historical theme with old pictures from Will Johnson’s collection and Orchid cottage has been given a nautical theme with underwater paintings.
