Nature Saba
offers a variety of hiking and nature trails over assorted terrain,
from the shoreline to the Top of Mount Scenery (Elfin Forest). Most
trails can be hiked on your own; trail maps are available at the front
desk along with walking sticks. Visit the Trail Shop for more detailed
information on a particular trail and acquire a deeper understanding
of the flora & fauna and Saban lore. You can also set up a hiking
schedule with James Johnson a.k.a. ‘Crocodile James’.
You must be wondering why he is referred to as ‘Crocodile James’,
if you catch a glimpse of the so-called knife he carries around and
his choice of attire you will completely understand. If you like we
can schedule a guided hike for you.

Snorkeling & Scuba Diving
Saba's beauty extends below the waterline into an exciting marine
environment rich in corals and active with fish life. Saba offers
dive enthusiasts and beginners alike a variety of dive sites from
fascinating pinnacle dives that rise from the ocean floor to depths
of 100 feet or shallower dives where one can enjoy more bottom time.
Saba’s underwater world is home to a busy population of colorful
tropical fish, large groupers, jacks, blue tangs, goatfish and parrotfish.
Lava tunnels and hot springs remind divers of the dramatic volcanic
beginnings of the island. Along the edge of Saba's sheer wall dives,
divers can sight turtles and rays of all shapes and sizes. Since the
island is so small, dive boats can reach most sites within minutes.
Snorklers are equally fascinated with Saba’s abundant marine
life. We recommend going out with the dive boat or consult with us
on spots where you can snorkel on your own.

Saba Marine Park
Established in 1987, the Saba Marine Park boasts 28 permanently moored
dive sites that are easily reached with 5-20 minute boat rides. Each
site varies in topography, depth and marine life. The Saba Marine
Park was not setup to help repair a damaged environment and ecosystem,
but rather to safeguard and ensure the continued quality of an extraordinary
resource for future generations.

Art
Saba has acquired quite an artist community over the last few years.
The Peanut Gallery located at Lambee's place offers a diverse selection
of artists work from oil paintings, pastels, photography, prints,
and much more. The art gallery also hosts an “Artist of the
Month” collection where you can sample works of either a resident
or visiting artist. In case you are feeling inspired the art gallery
also sells an array of art supplies. If you’re interested in
joining an art class by one of the resident artists, please make sure
to inquire whether one is taking place at the time of your visit.
Saba now has its own version of the Sistine Chapel created by resident
artist Heleen Cornet in the Sacred Heart Church in the village of
‘The Bottom’. This project took over 2 years to be completed.
While strolling through this village don't forget to stop by and see
this beautiful site or ask your friendly taxi driver to point this
out to you if you’re on an island tour.

Saba Lace
If you're thinking of purchasing that perfect piece of Saba Lace for
yourself or that special friend; then you should make it a point during
your stay to visit the "Saba Lace Boutique" located in the
village of Hell's Gate. We can arrange a taxi to take you there during
opening hours, which are from 9am till noon. We can also make arrangements
for someone to be there during after hours if the morning hours do
not coincide with your schedule.
Saba Lace is a unique needlecraft painstakingly created by the industrious
women on Saba. Saba lace, also known as Spanish work has a special
history. In the 1870’s, Mary Gertrude Hassell Johnson was sent
by her parents to study at a convent in Caracas, Venezuela. While
she was there, the nuns taught her how to create the intricate designs
of this needlecraft. Miss Hassell brought the craft back to Saba and
in 1884, when regular mail service first connected the island to the
outside world, the wives and daughters of Saba’s seafaring men
turned the craft into a mail-order cottage industry.
How the Saba women marketed their needlework demonstrates their ingenuity.
As boxes of merchandise were sent from the United States to Saba,
the ladies would copy the addresses of the American companies and
then wrote them a letter explaining their work and the prices. Often
a sympathetic person receiving the letter would post it on the company
bulletin board and ultimately the lace makers would receive orders
for their work.
By 1928, the Sabans were exporting almost $15000.00 worth of needlework
annually! Now, more than a century later, the skill learned by a young
Saba girl, still provides a means of support for many families on
the island. Blouses, dresses, tablecloths, napkins are only a few
of the pieces the Saban women create in a variety of colors.
Saba Lace is just one example of the unique features that is Saba.
We hope you enjoy owning and using your piece of this special needlework.

Saba Spice
Saba Spice along with other specialty liquors such as; Beauperthuy
Punch, Guavaberry, and Ms. Blyden were conceived at a time when
the only hard liquor available was ‘White Rum’. White
Rum was produced from Sugar Cane, and due to limited resources,
white rum was the cheapest liquor available at the time. Since necessity
is the mother of invention, the locals decided to utilize the white
rum in other ways, by making liquors from various fruits available
on the island. There is no record of when these liquors were actually
produced, but many historians believe this trend began around the
early 1800’s. From the early 1800’s to early 1900’s
the liquors were mainly produced for holidays and family events.
In the 1970’s upon the advent of tourism to the island, a
revival in the production of Saba Spice began. Samples can be obtained
at several gift stores and can be purchased in select quantities.
It is a true delight when served over ice-cream or as an after dinner
drink.
Guavaberry
is produced in limited quantities due to the limited availability
of the Guavaberries on the island. The Ms. Blyden liquor was abandoned
after a bug destroyed the cactus plant, which produced the fruit
that was utilized in its production.
Monsieur
Beauperthuy who was mayor of Marigot, gained fame in the neighboring
islands by introducing his Beauperthuy Punch. See recipe below.
Spiral
the peeling from 10 limes. Scrape away any white pulp and drop the
spirals into a fifth of rum. Set the bottle aside for at least a
week. The longer the lime steeps in the rum, the better the punch.
For
the syrup, combine in a heavy saucepan:
2 cups sugar
1 cup water
Stir these only until the sugar is dissolved. Then cook the mixture
over a low flame, without stirring until a little of the syrup forms
a soft ball when dropped into a cup of cold water. When syrup has
reached the soft ball stage, remove it from the fire. It should
be kept in the refrigerator when not in use. The rum and syrup are
combined in varying proportions to produce Beauperthuy Punch. With
more syrup it becomes an after drink liqueur. Less syrup and a tot
of the rum produce a refreshing drink for any time of the day.

The
Major Osmar Ralph Simmons Museum,
The Bottom
The Simmons family opened the island's newest attraction as a testimony
to patriarch, Major Osmar Ralph Simmons. The Major was a Saban police
officer for over 40 years, and a private collector of everyday artifacts.
An interesting aspect to the museum is the collection of artifacts
in progressive historical iterations, with a selection of early
telephones, including a battery-operated model.
Original
mahogany furniture and artifacts from family life and the major's
career spark conversation points with his widow Mrs. Carmen Simmons
the curator.
The museum is located diagonally opposite the Henry Every Home for
the Aged, towards The Ladder. Check with the tourist office for
opening hours. You can ask your friendly taxi driver to take you
there or if you’re strolling through ‘The Bottom’
it is definitely a must see.
The
Harry L. Johnson Museum,
Windwardside
Saba's Harry Luke Johnson Museum is located in a 160-year old Saban
sea captain's cottage in Windwardside. It is located in the middle
of a beautiful meadow, used as a public park for picnics and Sunday
croquet games. There is also a playground for small children.
The
Museum’s interior has retained the original furnishings of
the Victorian era. There is a small resource center with articles
on Saba and a collection of artifacts from the Amerindian archeological
sites around the island. Curator Sherrie Peterson will welcome you
and explain the exhibits. The museum is open from Monday to Friday
10am to noon and 2pm to 4pm, and upon request. Flyers have been
recently produced on various topics about the museum; don’t
forget to pick up a free copy while you’re there.
