Bring in a new century...
Our century old Flossie's cottage has had some minor upgrades with new linens and curtains in a "delft blue" style, the cottage still boosts its historical theme with timeless pictures on the walls and its classical Saba style build with its beautiful wooden floors and well manicured gardens.

New Year Festivities!
Once again Tropics Café hosted an exciting evening with a champagne party and a ½ hour fireworks display to bring in 2008!

New Faces at Juliana's Hotel and Tropics Café!
We have two new faces on the property.

Hensley our new Chef at Tropics Café; he's originally from Curacao, and before coming to Saba he was working at Oyster Bay Beach Resort on St. Maarten. Hensley has great new daily specials and a great Caribbean Night, so stop by to taste some of his great dishes!

Karen is the new face at our front desk, she's originally from South Africa and has been on Saba for almost a year now starting out as an "Ecoteer" (volunteer) at the Ecolodge Rendez-vous, after several months of volunteering there and her many other jobs she found afterwards on Saba; (including being lobster packer make sure to ask her how she got involved in that job!), she came to work at Juliana's Hotel, so come check in to meet Karen!

Surprise Paula!
While Chef Paula was on vacation the kitchen at Tropics Café got re-modeled, new kitchen appliances has been purchased and now the kitchen is roomy and cooler! Chef Paula was really surprise when she returned to work and is super happy behind her new stove and oven!

It’s a Boy!

On July 1st, weighing in at 7.7lbs Trevon Leandro arrived on planet earth courtesy of Leanna (and of course Travis), both mother, daddy and son are healthy proud and very happy! Congratulations to them both!

Leanna is on maternity leave awaiting the birth of her first child, no worries Mellanie van Djke has traveled across the pond from Holland to fill in for her while she’s away. Already a hit with staff and guests alike, Mellanie will be with us till August.

We now have easier access to Orchid Cottage! We have extended the deck at Tropics Café with a “boardwalk” towards Orchid Cottage, don’t worry there is still lots of privacy with our new gate leading up the pathway. Come down and check it out!

New Year goes off with bang & bubbly at
Tropics!
A magical evening was had poolside on New Years Eve as Tropics hosted it's first Champagne and fireworks night, the air was full of laughter and the sky was full of light as nearly 70 people partied in the New Year with

Staff Christmas Party

The staff of Juliana's & Tropics Cafe partied the night away at the Brigadoon. The evening was filled with great food, drink, a secret Santa gift exchange & laughter.

Juliana's Gets Botanical!

Stewart Chipka (Saba Orchid Research Center) has catalogued and posted signs of all the flora on and around Juliana's premises, he also plans to write a detailed handbook to accompany the signage.

New Barbeque at Orchid Cottage

To complete the Orchid Cottage make-over we've added a new area for barbecuing at the rear of the property, which increases the already ample deck area!
So now you can enjoy a barbeque under the stars.

Maintenance upgrades to Orchid
Orchid cottage has been freshly painted, new plants and flowers have been planted in the gardens, and the “outdoor” bathroom area has received a sprinkler and lighting systems so that Orchids and ferns will enjoy there new homes on the rock!

The underwater world comes to Julian’s Front Desk
Deck. Robbie Lynn does it again! Robby has recently been developing a range of marine themed furniture, his second piece of the series being a tubular sponge table base. He has kindly agreed to have his work on show outside of the Front Desk at Juliana’s. Many have already commented on how realistic it looks as you can see its detail threw a large tempered glass tabletop. This artistic addition now provides a great place to enjoy a sociable drink as the sunsets over the ridge

New menu at Tropics


Tropics has a complete new menu, but don't worry our Burgers are still there! We've expanded the appetizers section to include Nachos,
Quesadillas and wraps, our breakfast menu has also been extended, still a great place to dine poolside!


New Pond Lily Pond

Artist Robby Lynn has created another masterpiece. Our front entrance now boosts an amazing waterfall and pond with metal lilies created by Robby Lynn. Come down and check out our new water feature!

Staff Courses
Leanna, Paula and Lieke attended SESNA’s Customer Service course, a three night course taught by Saban Carol Zagers. They all enjoyed the course and said it was a nice refresher on the importance of showing Tropics and Juliana’s guests an excellent service.

Lieke Dellaert has joined Juliana’s staff, she will be on Saba for 5 months working on a market research study as her graduation project for the AVANS Hogeschool, where she studies International Business & Management.

Robbie Lynn has done it again! He’s transformed the Rec-room into another master piece of artwork! A new library book case, and “cottage area” for the computers, now with 2 computers for guests use. Don’t for get to bring down your laptops, wireless is available for free!

Christmas Dinner
Juliana’s and Tropics Staff enjoy Christmas dinner together on December 13th before Francia leaves to go home for her Christmas vacation. Many surprises were in store from Santa’s Secret gift exchange and a raffle with gifts from Wim and Johanna.

Getting a fresh look
Armond or maintenance man (also know as Picky) is painting the buildings and roofs so that everything will receive a fresh clean look for the coming New Year.
Malachy has also illustrated a beautiful new hotel sign
on one of the exterior walls of the Hotel.

Local Artist finishes Masterpiece in Mango!

Local artist and neighbor Robbie Lynn has made Mango Apartment into a fabulous getaway within the branches of his Mango Tree vision. The entire apartment has been redecorated with painted Mango trees that extend across walls and over ceilings. New blinds, linens and a unique mosquito effect awning in the bedroom have been added creating a truly unique jungle feel. Well done Mr. Lynn! Look out for further touches from Robbie at Tropics pool area in the near future...

Tropics Café Re-opens!


Everything's finished on time, the new bar, signage, recovered seat & hand painted signage! Tropics opened again for business on the 16th, everyone was very impressed by the totally rebuilt bar area, lot's more space and everything in its place...

Tropics Café Upgrades

Tropics will be open for deliveries only till September 15th, there are a couple of maintenance projects planned, which include building a new bar and recovering the booth in the back. Once Tropics opens again on the 16th you can expect the same great theme nights and excellent atmosphere!

New Intern

Maike Hofstra has now joined the staff at Juliana’s Hotel. Maike studies Tourism in Groningen and will be working on several projects during her 8 month stay here on Saba.

Dive Buddies’ Buffet


Tropics now boasts a new theme night! A pool side Dive buddies' Buffet, where people mingle with the instructors from all the dive centers on Saba, sharing their underwater experiences with fellow divers & dive crews. Enjoy an all you can eat buffet with kebabs hot from the BBQ, an open bar with beer, punch and all soft drinks from 6 - 9pm.on a Sunday evening. A must for Saba dive vets and newbies alike! $20.00 per person.



A Magical Evening...

Tropics hosts a magic show by “The magic Doctor” a visiting magician from Germany. Money disappeared, cards reappeared and a few things went up in smoke! To keep with the magical theme Tropics screened Disney's Aladdin. A great evening was had by all.

Staff Fun!
Tropics Staff enjoyed a day off together, which they spent in a cooking class and a wine tasting course at the Gate House. It was Tropics Café Poolside in the afternoon where the gang was joined by families who together enjoyed pizzas and the new hot tub!

Flossie’s face lift
It’s been 2 years and Flossie’s floor has been re-varnished again. We have also built a beautiful deck which can be used for tanning, relaxing and evening BBQ’s. There is also a hot tub which is great for star gazers in the evenings.

Hot Tubs!
Juliana’s now has two hot tubs, one at Flossie’s Cottage and the other at Tropics Café. So come and enjoy the sunset with a refreshing daiquiri while relaxing in the hot tub!

New theme night add at Tropics Café!
Tropics Café now boosts a great Caribbean Night with local and Caribbean dishes, such as fresh lobster and fish and goat stews served with fresh Saba veggies (such as christophenes), rice n peas and Johnny cakes. Menu changes weekly depending on local produce availabilities.

New Hammocks
Juliana’s Hotel now has new hammocks on all the porches! The sun had faded all our old ones, so now you can swing in the sunshine in our new parachute material hammocks. ENJOY!

Baby Boom
Congratulations Drinni and Elizabeth! Both Drinni and Elizabeth are pregnant and are both due in August. This will be Drinni’s second child and Elizabeth’s third child, we wish them and there families all the blessings, happiness and joys to come.

Staff Christmas Dinner
We were all finally able to sit around the table together and share a great Christmas meal. Chefs Carl and Rudolph spoiled us all at YIIK. Afterwards we all had some drinks at Swinging Doors, where Eddy now has Stella on tap!

Radios
All our rooms have received a new amenity, they now have CD radios, so bring down some of your favorite CD’s and listen to them in the comforts of your room.
We’re starting to create a CD book, so that you can pick out some music if you forgot to bring down your own.

For the second year running Saba will be hosting the Ennia Hell’s Gate Challage Triathlon 2004

Jesca’s Journey
Jesca will be doing her internship at Juliana’s Hotel for the coming 6 months, she will be involved with the setting up of our second annual Sea and Learn on Saba event, and also with the Hell’s Gate Challenge triathlon on Sunday December 5th 2004.

Tropics goes al fresco
We added great new outside dining facilities at Tropics; we’ve added four rum barrels which were transformed into great outdoor tables. Tropics has also added a unique “swingers” table…….the table chairs are actual swings……..Swing at your own risk!

Tropics Cafe hosts the Lakers & Pistons final two matches on the big screen, with a sports arena menu to match the ocassion!

Queen’s Day
Saba’s Queens Day was celebrated the Dutch way! Tropics served Dutch pancakes, poffertjes, apple flaps and croquettes. We also had Dutch themed games, such a pin the crown on the queen, flag hoisting competition and kopsijkeren.

Easter Brunch
Tropics celebrated Easter Sunday with a refreshing brunch, fresh juices, homemade muffins and cakes, and an Easter egg competition for the kids.

New Chef hired!
Paula Childs has been hired as the new chief at Tropics Café. She adds to the Tropics experience with her local dishes and great daily lunch specials. We’re all glad to have Paula on board.

Tropics introduces a new theme night! Monday nights Surf and Turf with Live Steel Pan Music (only place on island regularly) played by Karel Sorton. Chief Bernt from the Ecolodge Rendez-Vous joins Wim and Johanna, and serves BBQ grilled Lobster or Steak.

Movie Nights
Tropics now has Saba’s only Cinema. This out door movie theater boast a 12 x 18ft screen and entertains Tropics guests & locals every Friday night with a Dinner and a movie (Any choice of burger; beef, chicken, fish or chicken) for only $10.00, Opening night we showed Finding Nemo.

Valentine's Dinner
About 25 couples spent a romantic evening at Tropics, enjoying a 3 course dinner surrounded by Floral displays lovingly crafted by our Tourist board manager Glen.

Tropics New Management
Tropics Café located in Windwardside across from Juliana's Hotel is now under the management of hotel owner/operators Wim & Johanna. The restaurant previously served only vegetarian/natural foods, and the couple wanted to offer their customers a fuller menu, including meat and eggs, particularly requested by their tourists dive packages. The restaurant will be open every day from 7am until 9pm or closing; whichever comes first. The full menu will be served all day long, so tourists with a longing for burgers for breakfast may order at will.

Saba Triathlon a success!
42 participants joined the first annual Triathlon, called the Hell’s Gate Challenge. The quickest time of 1hr 55 min went to a St. Maarten participant and the second running up went to Saba’s Chris Porterfield with a time of 1hr 58min

Juliana’s wins best public garden award.
Juliana’s Hotel wins the best public garden award at Saba Day’s memorial service. Thank you Martje for the great work!

New Staff Member?
Is there a new staff member at Juliana’s Hotel? What will his position be? Wim and Johanna are the happiest couple on island due to the new arrival of there Labrador puppy Kane. Kane came down with Nurse Suzanne from Canada. Thank you Suzan, you’ve made us even happier now!

Organization of Triathlon
The island's first triathlon event, "The Hell's Gate Challenge," will take place on Sunday, December 7, the last day of the Saba Days weekend celebration. Organizer Johanna van t'Hof of Juliana's said that the rigorous courses were recently set out by the St. Maarten Friendly Island Triathlon Association (FITA) in cooperation with the Saba Conservation Foundation.
The first section, swimming, will start and end at Well's Bay, with a trajectory marked by buoys. The bike portion leads from Well's Bay through The Bottom and Windwardside, finishing at the end of the Mountain Road. The running segment will follow a loop from Rendezvous to Queen's Garden and over the Sandy Cruz trail ending at the Hell's Gate Roman Catholic church. The triathlon may also be executed by teams, with members taking only one or two segments, handing off to a team member for the next segment.

Sea and Learn a success!
Almost 100 adults and children attended the final evening of what promises to be the first annual Sea & Learn on Saba. Tropics, The Natural Café, hosted the event. Organizers set up the facility as an outdoor amphitheater with a huge screen and well equipped sound system.
The event was made possible through a grass roots cooperative effort headed by Lynn Costenaro of Sea Saba Dive Center and Johanna van t'Hof of Juliana's Hotel. Expert speakers were invited from as far away as York University in England but they also took advantage of local and regional expertise both on island and from the neighboring islands of Tortola, St. Maarten and Antigua. A different speaker at a different venue was scheduled each night in October. Topics ranged from rainforests and insects to turtles and muck diving. "Sea & Learn 2004 promises to be even bigger and better.

Flossie’s Cottage Floor gets a fresh look.
Flossie’s antique floor restored to its original condition. After stripping the original coating the floor was sanded smooth and re-varnished to show the splendor of its original color.

Rec. room floor gets rebuilt
Carpet out…tiles are in. The rec. room seems to be allot more work than anticipated. While taking out the carpet Wim and Martje realized that also the beams had to be replaced. Lots of work, but with a new tiled floor, the rec. room will now host a roomier internet café, library, conference room, game section and DVD area. Sea Saba’s dive classes and Suzanne Nielson’s Yoga classes will still be held in the rec. room as well.

Vanessa Leaves.
We were all sorry to see Vanessa leave! Vanessa has moved away to be with her boyfriend in the united States, We will definitely miss Vanessa, and hope that she’s able to make her dreams a reality.

Internet Café!
Juliana's joins the information superhighway and offers an internet cafe to it’s clients. Set up in a quite corner of the Juliana's rec. room. Access is password-protected. At $5 for 30 minutes, length of time on the .net is calculated on the honor system. Guests can also down load pictures from their digital cameras, and email these home in advance of their return. The hotel's computer is equipped with a CD burner, so that guests can make a record of their trip or leave that special photograph behind with their new Saban friends.

Introduced DVD players in Cottages
and Apartment

We have now upgraded the cottage with a DVD player, guests can now bring down DVDs of choice and enjoy these in there private cottages.

New gardener hired.
Marje has been hired as the new garden at Juliana’s Hotel, Martje is the Ecolodge Rendez-vous gardener and now joins the Juliana’s team in the afternoons 3 times a week. Glad to have you on board Martje.

Front desk office gets a new look.
The Front Desk office gets a paint job and new furniture. Painted in a pale blue, it gives the office a refreshing look, underwater paintings from artist Heleen Cornet are hung up and are also for sale.

Flossie’s and Orchid upgrades
New bed spreads, curtains and artwork are hung up in both Flossie’s and Orchid. Flossie’s has been given a historical theme with old pictures from Will Johnson’s collection and Orchid cottage has been given a nautical theme with underwater paintings.
